The Pictured Feelings Instrument (PFI) is an assessment used to identify and communicate feelings through a nonverbal vocabulary, for use with people aged between 5-65 years.

It consists of 26 standardised simple line drawings of facial and bodily expressions of specific feelings (each on its own card).

The nonverbal format helps overcome communication boundaries of culture, education, age and abilities.

The Pictured Feeling Instrument Manual provides information on:

  • Introduction to the PFI
  • Materials and Use
  • Interview Forms (Appendix 1)
  • Administration Instructions
  • Scoring and Assessment Suggestions
  • Case Studies and Examples
  • Normative Data
  • Development of the PFI and Ongoing Development
