Asperger's syndrome is a complex disorder, often defined as a high-functioning form of autism. It is characterised by a lack of social common sense, things like how to play or make friends or pick up social cues. As a result, an Asperger's child usually has difficulty in interacting with others.
Social Skills Picture Book
The Social Skills Picture Book provides a teaching tool that engages the attention and motivation of students who need help learning appropriate social skills. It demonstrates through pictures nearly 30 social skills, such as conversation, play, emotion management and empathy. Children of all ages learn more effectively when pictures are used to supplement verbal descriptions and instructions.
The realistic format plays to the visual strengths of children on the spectrum to teach appropriate social behaviours. Colour photographs illustrate the ""right way"" and ""wrong way"" to approach each situation and the positive/negative consequences of each. A facilitator (parent, teacher, etc.) is initially needed to explain each situation, and ask questions such as ""What is happening in this picture?"" Children then role-play skills until confident enough to practice them in real-life interactions.
The Social Skills Picture Book CD is also available, and is designed to be used along with the main book as a teaching tool. It contains all the photos from the book but no text.
The Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond
Practical, engaging, and down-to-earth, the Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond is a valuable tool to help teens navigate the often-mysterious rules of social conduct in everyday situations. This picture book appeals to the visual strengths of students on the autism spectrum, with colour photos of students demonstrating various social skills in the correct (and sometimes incorrect) way.
The skills depicted are meant to be read, role-played, corrected when necessary and finally, to be practiced by the student in real-life social situations. "Thought bubbles" show what people are thinking during these interactions (not always what you hoped!).
The Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond offers:
Covering real-life situations that are important to teens, such as making new friends, interrupting a conversation, giving class presentations, working as part of a group and Interviewing for a job, this resource is relevant and invaluable for teachers and parents, providing guidance and advice for developing social skills in the high school years.
The Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond CD is also available, and is designed to be used along with the main book as a teaching tool. It contains all the photos from the book but no text.
