Spelling Mastery International Edition FAQs

Q: What is new in the International Edition of Spelling Mastery?
A: All words previously spelled using American conventions have been updated to British English conventions.

Q: Why is it called the 'International Edition' rather than ‘Australian,’ ‘New Zealand,’ or ‘British’?
A: Spelling Mastery is a Tier 1 spelling program used in many English-speaking countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The term ‘International’ reflects its
suitability across these regions.

Q: Can you give an example of the spelling changes?
A: Yes. For example, words ending in ‘-ize’ have been changed to ‘-ise’, and American spellings such s ‘color’ are now spelled ‘colour’.

Q: Will the current (US) edition still be available to purchase?
A: Yes. The US edition will remain available for at least the next 2–3 years for existing adopters.

Q: Should new adopters purchase the International or US edition?
A: New adopters should purchase the International Edition. The US edition should only be used by current adopters who have already invested in US-version Teacher Materials in the last 1-2 years and who do not with to switch over straight away.

Q: Can current users of the US edition switch to the International Edition?
A: Yes. If your budget allows, we encourage existing users to transition to the International Edition.

Q: Why hasn’t the Scope and Sequence, script, or number of lessons changed in the new edition?
A: Direct Instruction programs are backed by research and do not require frequent changes. Their effectiveness has been demonstrated through decades of evidence. While teachers may wish for new lessons, the lessons remain new to students.

Q: Are the US and International editions compatible?
A: No. The editions are not interchangeable. Page numbers, student workbook alignment, and scripting differ between editions.

Q: Is there a digital version of the new International Edition?
A: No. The International Edition is a print-only resource, comprising a Teacher Presentation Book and consumable student workbooks (Levels A–F).

Q: What curriculum mapping is available for the International Edition?
A:

  • ACARA F–10 English (v9.0) – available now
  • NESA F–10 English – available Term 1, 2026
  • New Zealand English Curriculum – available Term 1, 2026
  • UK R–10 English Curriculum – available Term 1, 2026

Q: Is there a way to observe a Spelling Mastery lesson in action?
A: Yes. A walkthrough video is available here.

Q: How long does a typical Spelling Mastery lesson take?
A: Approximately 20 minutes.

Q: How do we determine which level students should start at?
A: An initial placement test determines entry level. Ongoing mastery tests are embedded to ensure students are progressing or highlight where remediation is needed.

Q: Is Spelling Mastery aligned with the Science of Learning?
A: Yes. The program aligns with all key principles of the Science of Learning.

Q: Is Spelling Mastery evidence-based?
A: Yes. Spelling Mastery and the Direct Instruction approach are supported by decades of independent research.

Q: When will the new edition of Spelling Mastery be available?
A: Stock is due in mid-late December 2025, ready for delivery to schools for commencement of Term 1, 2026. You can pre-order the materials now.
