Westmead Feelings Program 1 (WFP 1) is an evidence-based clinical intervention package developed by The Children's Hospital at Westmead, and designed specifically to teach emotional and social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and mild intellectual disability.
WFP 1 improves emotional competence in children with ASD and mild intellectual disability (ID), both at home and at school. Specifically, skills in understanding and communicating their emotions, skills in understanding others’ emotions and skills in regulating emotions are developed in children with ASD and mild ID after participating in WFP 1.
WFP 1 also improves mental health and social skills among children with ASD and mild ID. WFP 1 can build resilience in these children, and provide opportunities to develop meaningful friendships with their peers within the group.
WFP 1 can significantly improve quality of life for children with ASD, particularly given that social−emotional skills are associated with a range of positive mental health, social and academic outcomes in typically developing children.
