Purpose: Measure mastery of developmental milestones across five global domains
Age: Birth – 7.11 years
Time: 5 to 10 minutes per subtest

As children age, they typically attain critical skills and behaviors sequentially, from simple to complex. Assessment of developmental strengths and needs during this time is critical for early development centers, private clinicians, schools, and others seeking to determine the need for educational resources or interventions and build plans accordingly.

The Battelle® Developmental Inventory, Third Edition™ (BDI-3™) measures mastery of developmental milestones in the following global domains:

  • Communication
  • Social-emotional
  • Adaptive
  • Motor
  • Cognitive

In addition to the domains above, BDI-3™ has added the all-new Battelle® Early Academic Survey (BEAS™), with two domains specifically designed to measure foundational literacy and mathematics skills in children ages 3 years 6 months to 7 years 11 months. What truly sets the BEAS™ apart? There's no need to wait until age 5 as required by most other early childhood academic assessments.

The BDI-3 offers you flexibility in purchasing and administration.

Three kits are available:

  1. Developmental Complete: Ideal for assessing developmental milestones for school readiness, determine eligibility for special education services and use data to inform the development of IFSPs and IEPs
  2. Screener: Ideal for quickly measuring developmental progress across the 5 domains, and universally screening for signs of developmental delays
  3. Early Academic Survey: Ideal for measuring foundational academic skill proficiency, providing a quick assessment of a young child's risk of academic delays in literacy and math and early childhood progress monitoring

All kits include electronic record forms (ERFs) - to access the online forms and scoring on Riverside Score, users will require an Online Access Key (1 year subscription - 1 per user).

Record Forms (in hard-copy or electronic format) can then be purchased and replenished as required.

Comprehensive. Flexible. Defensible.

BDI-3™ is the only assessment that measures global domains from birth to 7 years, 11 months. Providing examiners with a complete assessment, a screening assessment, and an early academic survey, it is by far the most holistic assessment on the market for early childhood assessment.

BDI-3™ is used to:

  • Progress monitoring for early childhood development
  • Early identification of developmental delays to activate access to services
  • Assess developmental milestones for school readiness
  • Help determine eligibility for special education services
  • Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

Child-friendly items, tester-friendly administration.

BDI-3™ items are child-friendly and easy to administer, with clear and efficient item-scoring criteria. Based on the multifaceted information from structured, observational, and interview items, BDI-3™ can be used by an individual or team of professionals to create a comprehensive picture of a child's skills.

Examiners can choose to administer just one domain, all domains, or any combination as needed, and can begin with any domain of the examiner's choice. "Scripting" helps ensure administration consistency, and it also allows the examiner flexibility to query where necessary to ensure sufficient information is gathered.

BDI-3™ Screening Test

The BDI-3™Screening Test is used to quickly screen and evaluate early childhood developmental milestones to help identify children that are at risk for developmental delays or disabilities.

The BDI-3 Screening Test consists of a subset of test items from each domain found in the BDI-3 Developmental item bank. The scoring procedures are similar to those of the full BDI-3 and aid in identifying children who may need additional testing.

  • Provides a quick screening of key developmental milestones for school readiness
  • Expeditiously evaluate a large number of children
  • Incorporates multiple administration formats:
    • Structured: Play-based activities using child-friendly manipulatives
    • Observation: Occurring in a child’s natural setting
    • Interview: Scripted questions for a parent or caregiver
  • Administration and scoring designed for ease of use by the examiner: Easily determine a Cut-Score (cuts are provided at -1.0 SD, -1.5 SDs and -2.0 SD) to indicate children that should be referred for further testing using the full BDI-3 Developmental Battery

New to the 3rd Edition – The Battelle Early Academic Survey (BEAS), A New Way to Assess Early Academic Skills.

The Battelle® Early Academic Survey (BEAS™) is a new academic solution for assessing literacy and mathematics skills in children ages 3 years 6 months to 7 years 11 months. The BEAS contains items targeting early foundational skills in Literacy and Mathematics.

The five literacy sub-domains and the four mathematics sub-domains in BEAS are all key indicators of how the child will do when he or she first enters school. Because the BEAS can be administered to children through 7 years, 11 months, it will also help to monitor these skills as the child continues their path towards early academic success.

Examiners will be delighted at how quick and easy the BEAS is to administer. An easy to read BEAS Table of Scores Report will not only include multiple scores such as Standard Scores and Percentile Ranks, but also a visual chart which quickly lets the examiner determine if the child is in need of immediate support, should be monitored, or is on track.

  • Social-Emotional - Subdomains: Adult interaction, Peer interaction, Self-concept & social role
  • Communication - Subdomains: Reception, Expressive, Articulation
  • Motor - Subdomains: Gross, Fine, Perceptual
  • Cognitive - Subdomains: Attention and memory, Perception and concept, Reasoning and academic skills
  • Adaptive - Subdomains: Self-care, Personal Responsibility
