The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is used to assess adult personality and psychopathology, from 18-89 years of age. It assesses psychopathological syndromes and provides information relevant for clinical diagnosis, treatment planning, and screening for psychopathology.

It contains 344-items, and is self-administered. It consists of 22 non-overlapping full scales covering constructs relevant to a broad-based assessment of mental disorders.

The PAI can be administered and scored in three ways: pen-and-paper, scoring software or online.

The PAI 2nd ed. Professional Manual provides information on:

  • Administration (Test Materials, Considerations, Procedures)
  • Scoring (using the handscorable Answer Sheet and Profile Form)
  • Interpretation
  • Descriptive Statistics
  • Development of the PAI
  • Structure of the PAI
  • Psychometrics

The 2nd ed. update (2010) included the following additions:

  • Addresses many areas of additional study and research, including an expanded discussion of administration considerations and a variety of strategies for the interpretation of clinical data.
  • Includes both the original reliability and validation studies of the instrument and pertinent reliability/validity data from important subsequent research studies of the original PAI scales as well as the supplemental scales and indexes.
  • Outlines revisions made to the Profile Form-Adult and Critical Item Form.
